An Introduction
Corporate entertainer Anthony Lindan has closed every engagement for the past fifteen years with his Incredible Suit Jacket Escape. Honed over thousands of performances in every possible environment and for every kind of audience the Incredible Suit Jacket Escape is large scale, one-man illusion that fills a stage and fits in a briefcase.

Routine Description
The performer explains that he would like to close his show with an homage to the incredible magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. One of Harry Houdini's amazing feats was to escape from a straight jacket. Now it was legendary that Houdini was in such peak physical shape that he was able to dislocate body parts and free himself from some of the toughest straight jackets ever manufactured. The performer admits that he is not exactly in the phenomenal physical condition Houdini was, so in honour of the great master, he will attempt to escape from his own suit jacket! As the audience laughter dies down, the performer explains that to make things more challenging, his hands will be cuffed together, making it nearly impossible for him to make his escape. Two volunteers are invited to the stage to inspect the handcuffs and locks, and proceed to lock the performers hands behind his back. A curtain that encircles the performer is raised by the two volunteers. It's at this point that the hilarious mayhem begins! The curtain is raised and lowered several times, each time revealing the performer (and his jacket) in more and more ludicrous physical positions. The jacket is half on half off, then it's on completely backwards, then it's almost off but the cuffs are snagged painfully between the performer's legs! Impossibly the jacket ends up hanging free from the performer's head and his hands are still cuffed behind his back! Suddenly he offers a free hand to shake the hand of the volunteer on his left and just a suddenly he offers his other to shake the volunteer's hand on his right, and the audience laughs their way into a huge round of applause!

History, Development & Influences
Anthony Lindan explains his obsession with the classic spirit cabinet and how he wanted to create a similar, yet comedic version, for his one-man show. The routine is pain-stakingly taken apart move by move by Anthony who teaches every nuance and detail in chronological order so you can follow along with props in hand. Each position of the jacket and cuffs is demonstrated and how to quickly and efficiently get into each position is dissected visually.

Once you have the basic progession down pat, you can rehearse the routine by following along with Anthony as he covers the absolute basic moves in sequence. From the beginning to the middle until the final pose, this will help etch the entire routine into your physical memory.

Anthony discusses various performance considerations including microphone issues, using music to enhance the routine, calling them handcuffs and not shackles and finally shares an alternate curtain construction that he used for many years with great success.

No Jacket? No Problem!
As the jacket is not a tricky prop, there is no reason you have to use your own jacket. In fact early on in Anthony's experience with the routine he forgot his jacket and was forced to use an audience member's borrowed jacket for the routine! Anthony also discusses his earlier use of a bathrobe for the escape, along with other types of jackets, cardigans and outerwear that can be used.

Brainwash: A version of the classic Dai Vernon Brainwave Deck effect which can be performed with a borrowed regular deck. A spectator freely names any card they wish and you reveal that you knew in advance which card they would name and - as additional evidence you even have a duplicate of the freely named card in the zippered compartment of a wallet which an audience member was holding onto before the card was even named! No restricted choice - no stooges - they can name any card - and absolutely no palming or sleights.

Pencil through Coin: A pencil is penetrated through a borrowed initialed coin. Anthony's great handling enables the spectator to actually remove their marked coin from the pencil themselves! Birthday Deck: A pack of cards with dates and months on the faces with which you can predict any one of the 365 days of the year - it could be a spectator's birthday, anniversary or anything - and then cause all the other cards in the pack to turn completely blank! Nick Menday wrote in Abracadabra magazine that this routine was: "a stunning effect...simple, direct and easy to perform".

Plus: Life is Sweet - an instantly reset routine in which you take your audience back in time just by using items which can be found in any restaurant or party setting. Palmprint - you prove that the future really is in a spectator's palm with this simple strong routine. Coin Across Body - a vanished coin magically appears in a spectator's hand - twice! Match of the Day - a lit match vanishes from your hand and appears in a spectator's tightly closed fist.

Every mentalist or magician has the desire to foretell destiny, to look into the future. What follows is an eyewitness account of the extraordinary phenomenon now possible with Mastermind!

Imagine... A registered and notarized envelope is mailed to the mayor of your town seven days before your show is to take place. Inside this single, ungimmicked envelope is a single, ungimmicked playing card with a blue back. The mayor is instructed to keep the envelope in his possession and not let anyone tamper with it. (In fact, no one ever does, and there is never any switching of envelopes or cards ever throughout the entire routine.)

On the night of your show, a red-backed deck of cards is freely shown. Each of the cards is absolutely different, and the deck is honestly shuffled and fairly cut. (Note, there are no long or short cards, no roughed cards, no stacked arrangements, no marked cards, no stripped cards, no crimps, no false counts, and no sleight of hand involved whatsoever!) The deck, quite honestly, appears ordinary in every respect. It is openly ribbon-spread face-up on the table, offering a bird's-eye view that each card is in fact different.

Once the mayor is satisfied that the cards are thoroughly mixed, they are then ribbon-spread face down, allowing for an uninhibited, free choice of any card. The selection here is immaculately clean. To repeat, any card may be selected! The card the mayor himself slides out of the deck is immediately turned face-up. Let's say it is the three of hearts. The mayor himself opens the prediction envelope that is still in his possession, and inside is the one card-a matching three of hearts! The "impossible" has just occurred!

Now for the unprecedented test conditions of Mastermind:

1. No forcing procedure of any kind is ever employed! This includes psychological, mathematical, spelling, timing or classic. Just fair, free, and clean.
2. No roughed cards.
3. No duplicate cards relied on.
4. No stacked arrangements.
5. No Himber Wallets or switching of envelopes or cards ever!
6. The prediction card is actually in the envelope for the entire week. It is the same card removed from the envelope by the mayor!
7. Even if the prediction is tampered with, the outcome of the trick will remain unaltered. (This is a first in prediction effects!)
8. Can be done as a test in telepathy between two cities over the telephone.
9. Absolutely no sleight of hand required!
10. No long or short cards employed.

Imagine many other exciting possibilities with Mastermind....

An exceedingly clean selection process as described above is done to the host of your local radio station. Once the card has been selected in the fairest manner as described above, you ask the host to look in the classified ads of the local paper. There is the ad thanking the radio station, giving your contact details, and finishing with the name of the selected card. You have just done a prediction that is captured for all to see, all to remember for years to come.

A spectator places a selection in their back pocket. Instantly, the selection transposes with another selection a visual manner. The spectator places and removes the card.

Married and Single
Two signed cards melt together forming a single card.

Two Free
Two spectators freely select and return their cards to the pack. The magician picks up the deck and shows the bottom and top cards, not being the selections. Holding the deck in one hand the magician visually transforms the cards into the selections.

The owners of five borrowed objects are successfully divined with plenty of laughter, fun, and mystery.

Mesmer's Pencil - A demonstration of "animal magnetism." A pencil resting on the performer's hand rises as a female audience member draws near. She then discovers, after the performer suggests that the pencil is now very heavy, that she cannot lift it. After she changes the image in her mind, the pencil becomes light again and it is given to her as a souvenir. This routine has been used by some of the most distinguished mentalists in the world.

Dollar Divination - The performer demonstrates his ability to determine six of the serial numbers from any borrowed bill with only his fingertips. He then has one spectator mentally transmit the last two digits to another with total accuracy. Versatile for close-up or stage.

Angel's Flight - Even though the performer is at quite some distance, he reveals the playing cards the audience members are thinking of. Finally, the entire audience, using their collective imagination, divines the number of cards that were previously hidden away. A wonderful mystery wrapped in a true story that also utilizes a totally novel - and very deceptive - deck switch!

Thoughts with Wings - A newspaper section is torn into small pieces by a spectator, who then selects a single piece. She is then asked to mentally select a single word from the page and with absolutely no questions asked, the performer correctly reveals the chosen word. A stunning display of what can only be actual mind reading.

Shotgun
Immediately after any four of a kind, let's say the Kings, are clearly shown on top, the pack is riffled causing them to vanish. The cards are then spread to show the Kings are now evenly distributed face-up throughout the deck.

Katana Spread
A mysterious production of four cards that visually appear face-up as the deck is spread across the table.

Pure Slap
The four Kings are face-up on top of the deck as the spectator places the four aces face-up throughout the deck. The cards are cleanly squared with nothing to see. With just a riffle of the cards, the Kings and Aces instantly transpose. The four Aces are now on on top and in the center are the four Kings. This is without a doubt the most direct handling of this classic effect. There is no setup and it can be instantely repeated.

Back Slap
Back Slap is a variation of Pure Slap that has fooled many magicians and is great for your most skeptical spectators.

Samurai Kut
From a shuffled deck, the cards are tossed onto a table. As the cards land, they break into four even packets. The spectator can now turn over the top card of each to reveal the four Aces.

Nyquist 1
The four Kings are placed face-up on top of the deck. Four selections are now removed and clearly inserted back into the deck. Everthing is squared. With just a riffle, the Kings vanish from the top. The deck is spread out to show the Kings are now face-up throughout the deck and directly next to each selection.

Nyquist 2
In this variation of Nyquist 1, having four selections isn't necessary. After the four Kings are removed from the deck, they are set aside. The deck is now spread to show all the cards are face down. The cards are squared and the Kings placed on top. With just a riffle, the Kings vanish. The cards are now respread to reveal the Kings are now face-up in different parts throughout the deck.

Ricochet
This is a beautiful version of Bill Goodwin's Slap Exchange. Continuing with the theme of four card transpositions, Ricochet delivers like no other. Similar in effect to Pure Slap, but with the most surprising kicker that leaves no explantion.

Ace Cutting 1
Irving's tribute to John Scarney's 'Cutting to The Aces'. After the cards have been thorougly mixed, you prove that no breaks, crimps or jogs will be used. You then proceed to cut to the four Aces.

Ace Cutting 2
Similar in effect to Ace Cutting 1, however, in this variation, you explain that the reason why you were able to cut to the Aces is because they were marked as you turn them over to show they're a different back design from the rest of the deck. It doesn't stop there though as you now turn over all the cards to show they're blank.

Distribution Technique

The spectator is instructed to think on any one of the 16 animals on the card (completely free choice), and to visualize the animal appearing in 4 different colors. No words are spoken by the spectator, and no questions are asked.

The performer immediately begins to reveal information about the animal:

The spectator is asked to think of different characteristics about the animal, such as its size, color, number of legs it has, habitat, etc. (again, nothing is spoken by the spectator, and no questions are asked).

The first effect is this:

A spectator is handed a set of folded instructions, and asked not to read them yet. He is told to try to pick up on what the instructions are telepathically. He is then asked to name one of the symbols shown on the card. Lets say he names the cylinder. The instructions are opened by the spectator and read out loud...the instructions read "PLEASE CHOOSE THE CYLINDER". The spectator was able to pick up on the instructions telepathically!!

Next, three spectators are each asked to think of a symbol on a grid of 16 symbols. The performer immediately begins to reveal some information about each spectators chosen symbols...then reveals all three symbols correctly! (at no time are the spectators asked any questions, nor is anything written down!)

Effect: You show a deck of playing cards - they're blank on the back and on the face you have written all the letters of the alphabet, one letter on each card. The spectator shuffles the deck and selects any four cards. He is then asked to form a word from the four cards chosen. If it so happens that he can make more than one word - he is allowed a COMPLETELY FREE CHOICE of which word he would like to settle on. A prediction that has been in full view throughout is then shown to accuratley match the freely chosen word!

A spectator selects a card from your deck; you fold the card in quarters and have the spectator sign its face. Once the card is signed, you tear it into two, then four pieces. The pieces are clearly separate from each other. You place two of the pieces between your lips and hold the other two at your fingertips. With no possible funny business, you restore the two pieces you were holding in your hands, leaving nothing to hide or add! Take the third piece at your fingertips, and as impossible as it seems, it becomes fused with the rest of the card as you simply hold it in place -- an impossible and very visual restoration. Now bring the card with the missing corner to your lips and the spectators will see the last piece melt into place in full view! Show your hands empty, which they really are, and don't forget to return the card to the spectator, who will confirm that the card is indeed the one he signed.

ANNIHILATION
The magician shows a deck of cards and states that it contains two predictions. A card is freely chosen (really!) and hidden. Nobody sees the face of the card (magician or spectator).
